For seniors who want to be healthy and independent, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommend four types of exercises:
There are four main types of exercise and seniors need some of each:
1. Survival capacity – like walking, swimming, or riding a bike – which build “staying power” and turn the health of the heart and circulatory system
2. Strengthening exercises which build muscle tissue and change age-related muscle loss
3. Stretching exercises to keep the body limber and flexible
4. Balance exercises to reduce the chances of a fall
