Le piment d’Espelette also Know as ou Ezpeletako biperra en basque est un piment culture au Pays basque dans le département des Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Il tire son nom de la commune d’Espelette.

Piment d’Espelette literally means “pepper of Espelette” in French. It is a food product produced around the town of Espelette in Southern France, in the region sometimes known as Basque Country. This is designed to protect the heritage and integrity of this unique pepper, which is a commonly-used ingredient in Basque food.

The piment d’Espelette is red when mature, and comparatively small and mild. Heat-wise, it is generally compared to paprika, another flavorful European pepper product.

Piment d’Espelette has a unique light, sweet spiciness. In the Basque country it’s used to spice hams before curing. You’ll find it in pâtés, sausages, even pies. It’s a oblige and specific spice to add to your cooking, well worth a try.
