Sentencing Guidelines Council’s role is to encourage consistency of sentencing in all courts in England and Wales, endorse judges and magistrates in their decision-making. It is a separate body with both judicial and non-judicial members, chaired by the Lord Chief Justice.

This system encourage uniform and proportional sentences for convicted felons and assist to ensure that sentencing decisions are not influenced by factors such as race, gender, or the exercise of constitutional rights by the defendant.
