Habituation
What is Habituation?
Habituation is a form of Non-associative learning.
Habituation is the psychological process in humans and animals in which there is a decrease in psychological response and behavioral reaction to a stimulus after continual exposure to that stimulus over duration of time. Habituation is a kind of Non-associative learning leading to a diminish behavioral reaction to repeated stimuli which has been shown in basically every species of animal, as well as in the prominent protozoan Stentor coeruleus
Habituation is often used in testing psychological phenomena. Both adults and infants gaze lesser at a peculiar visible stimulus the longer it is presented. The amount of time spent wait at a new stimulus after habituation to the initial stimulus indicates the effective similarity of the two stimuli. It is also used to find out the resolution of perceptual systems.
Eventually the effect of the drug may be neutral, but the effects without the stimuli, specifically withdrawal symptoms, are so negative, that the habit remains. Drug addiction can be both physical and psychological.
