Beta Vulgaris
Beta Vulgaris
The Beta vulgaris is a plant in the amaranth family. It is best known in its numerous prepared kinds, the best known of which is likely the red root vegetable known as the Beta vulgaris or garden beet. The Beta vulgaris has a long history of development extending back to the second millennium BC. The plant was likely adapted somewhere along the Mediterranean, whence it was later extending to Babylonia by the 8th century BC and as far east as China by 850 AD. Beta vulgaris is an herbaceous plant or rarely perennial plant with leafy stems growing to 1–2 m tall.
Location
The wild progenitor of beets and chard is the Beta vulgaris subsp. maritime, which develops in seaside habitats along the coasts in Europe, North Africa and the Mediterranean region.
Usage
Many gardeners detect Swiss chard, particularly some of the red and yellow varieties, beautiful enough for the flower border and indeed some kinds are developed primarily as ornamentals.
