In Bartending, Bishop

In Bartending, What is Bishop?
Bishop is one of the classic English hot punches or hot mixed drink that were popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. Bishop obtains its name from its purple color reminiscent of the uniform worn by bishops of the Protestant faith. Bishop would have been served to all family members, as it was quite common for young people to share in alcoholic drinks.

Most British taverns would have requested bishop to its clients, and it was especially enjoyed during the Christmas season. Samuel Johnson, in his dictionary, performs quite familiar with the drink. It might also have been comforting to drink bishop or other hot punches because houses were often quite cold, particularly those belonging to the poor.
