Protein-energy malnutrition denotes to a form of malnutrition where there is inadequate protein intake. Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) is a potentially disastrous body-depletion disorder. Protein malnutrition is normally caused by inadequate nutrient intake in conjunction with the stress response. Protein-energy malnutrition affects children the most because they have less protein intake.

Types included of Protein Malnutrition
Kwashiorkor (protein malnutrition predominant)
Marasmic Kwashiorkor (marked protein deficiency and marked calorie insufficiency signs present, sometimes referred to as the most severe form of malnutrition)
Marasmus (deficiency in both calorie and protein nutrition)
