Opportunity, mission appointment MER-B (Mars Exploration Rover – B), is the second of the two rovers of NASA’s current Mars consideration Rover Mission. Its name was selected by a NASA-sponsored student essay contest. The primary surface assignment for Opportunity was designed to last 90 sols. The assignment has received various extensions and as of 17 November 2009 had passed 2,100 sols
Objectives
The scientific objectives of the Mars Exploration Rover mission are to:
1. Characterize the mineralogy and textures of rocks and soils and determine the processes that created them.
2. Assess whether those environments were conducive to life.
3. Search for geological clues to the environmental conditions that existed when liquid water was present.
4. Determine the distribution and composition of minerals, rocks, and soils surrounding the landing sites.
