Owl Pellet

What is an Owl Pellet
Owl pellets are masses of bone, teeth, hair, feathers and exoskeletons of several animals exploited upon by raptors, or birds of prey. Owls, similar most birds, are not capable to chew their food. Owls have a unique way of ridding themselves of any parts of their exploit that cannot be digested. However, unlike other birds, they do not have an organ called a stomach, which is useful to store swallowed food to be digested at a later time.

The indigestible parts are overcome from the owl’s body in an owl pellet. Owls usually swallow their exploit, small rodents and anything else they can handle to catch, whole. Pellets are developed and regurgitated not only by owls, but by hawks, eagles and other raptors that swallow their exploit whole of in small pieces. The owl pellets that you will be studying in this lab have been gathered and fumigated from common barn owls.
