Mediastinoscopy
Mediastinoscopy
A mediastinoscopy is a surgical process to stage the lung cancer. This process is performed to decide if a patient has lung cancer or lymphoma. It is also used to analyze tuberculosis or determine if patients are suffering from other lung problems. An incision is made at the base of the neck and this is done by a thoracic surgeon. Mediastinoscopy is a form of ‘keyhole’ surgery where only very small cuts are built to the body.
When a surgeon executes a mediastinoscopy on a patient, a small cut is made on the left side of the chest near the breastbone or over the breastbone area. Before a mediastinoscopy is executed, the doctor will demand the patient to sign a permission form, giving permission for the doctor to conduct the surgery. A scope named a mediastinoscope is located in the opening. The mediastinoscope is then utilized to extract a tissue sample, also named a biopsy.
