Sylvia Plath was an American poet, author, children’s writer, and short story writer who lived and functioned in the United Kingdom for much of her life. She ached from depression and finally devoted suicide. Plath is recalled for her intense poems such as “Daddy and Mirror,” but is also recalled for her mightily novel, The Bell Jar. The Bell Jar, primitively issued in 1963, was Sylvia Plath’s only issued novel and is regarded an American classic.
Through her focus on engaging the vocation of her ambitions, Esther questions, and sometimes does not question, her own opinions of morality and her own activity. The Bell Jar takes a dark, honest look at a talented youth who is attempting to realize who she is. Through the part of Esther, Plath analyzes society’s reactions to ambition in women as fought to ambition in men.
