What is the role of songwriter?
A songwriter is one who writes the lyrics or music for songs. The mission of Songwriters Resource Network is to inform and empower songwriters by providing reliable information about all aspects of songwriting, lyric writing, composition and music publishing. One who writes only lyrics may be called a lyricist, while one who writes only music may be called a composer. One who writes only lyrics may be called a lyricist, while one who writes only music may be called a composer.
Knowledge of individual music technology and business skills is seen as necessary to make a songwriting career and music colleges extend songwriting diplomas and degrees with music business modules. Popular culture songs may be written by group members, but are now often written by staff writers: songwriters directly employed by music publishers. Songwriters must be willing to market their own songs to be successful.
