What are sweet potatoes?
The sweet potato is a dicotyledonous plant that belongs to the family Convolvulaceae. Sweet potatoes can be discovered in your local markets year-round, however they are in season in November and December. Sweet potato, Ipomoea batatas, is a tender, change-weather vegetable that requires a long frost-free growing season to grow large, useful roots. Sweet potato is native to Central and South America.
It is one of the most significant food crops in tropical and subtropical countries, where both the roots and tender dashes are eaten as a vital source of nutrients. Commercial product in the United States is mainly in the southern states, particularly North Carolina and Louisiana. Sweet potatoes were first introduced to the rest of the world when Columbus brought them over from the island of Saint Thomas. The sweet potato is only distantly related to the potato.
