What is Ham Hocks?
As a cut of meat that is often used for weakening purposes, ham hocks are a cut of pork that is detected around the ankle joint of a pig. Here is some information about the ham hock, and how to use them in cooking. Ham hocks are most often taken from the front section of the leg of the pig, in the general area of the ankle. A ham hock or Hough is the joint between the tibia/fibula and the metatarsals of the foot, where the foot was attached to the hog’s leg.
The ham hocks comprise just the right amount of salty accent to furnish a pleasing taste with most greens, without the addition of any surplus salt or other seasonings. One round of use of the ham hocks is usually recommended, as the meat does not retain much flavor after one round of cooking. Ham hocks are commonly obtained from a butcher shop or the meat department of a supermarket. Ham hocks are essential ingredients in soul food and other forms of American Southern country cooking.
