Meconium Ileus
What is Meconium IIeus?
Meconium is the timing stools of a babe. Unlike afterward feces, meconium is composed of materials ingested during the time the infant spends in the uterus: eternal epithelial cells, lanugo, mucus, amniotic fluid, bile, and water. Meconium is the material found in the intestine in a newborn. Meconium ileus is obstruction of the terminal ileum by abnormally tenacious meconium; it almost universally occurs in neonates with cystic fibrosis. The condition results from a deficiency in pancreatic enzymes and is the earliest manifestation of cystic fibrosis.
Meconium ileus is almost always an early manifestation of cystic fibrosis, which causes GI secretions to be extremely viscid and adherent to the intestinal mucosa. Meconium ileus is the intestinal obstructive variant of cystic fibrosis or mucoviscidosis. Approximately 15% to 20% of infants with cystic fibrosis also present with intestinal obstruction related to meconium ileus. It now is known that it also affects the secretions from the intestine.
