Varicella Vaccine
What is Varicella Vaccine?
The varicella vaccine is a live (attenuated) vaccine that defends against the viral disease normally known as chickenpox. Chickenpox vaccine is the best way to prevent chickenpox. Vaccination not only protects vaccinated persons, it also reduces the risk for exposure in the community for persons unable to be vaccinated because of illness or other conditions, including those who may be at greater risk for intense disease. If a vaccinated person does get chickenpox, it is usually a very mild case lasting only a few days and involving fewer skin lesions (usually less than 50), mild or no fever, and few other symptoms.
The vaccine has more lately been determined to be effectiveness at preventing shingles (zoster) in persons 60 years of age and older, if administered regularly. The chickenpox vaccine works very well in preventing the disease. A small number of people who get the vaccine will still get chickenpox. However, they usually have a milder case than those seen in persons who did not receive the vaccine.
