Drought

What is Dought?

A drought (or drouth [archaic]) is a covered period of months or years when a region notes a deficiency in its water supply. It can have a substantial impact on the ecosystem and agriculture of the impressed region. Drought usually results in a water shortage that badly interferes with human activity. Drought impacts can be economic, social, and environmental. A drought happens when there no rain for a long period of time. In a drought plants do not grow properly. As streams and rivers dry up plants and animals die. If a drought lasts a long time, people may also die of starvation and the land may become desert.

The drought of 1933-35, during which prominent areas of the Great Plains became known as the Dust Bowl, is an example of a disastrous drought that took place in the United States. The effect of the drought was brought about by over cropping, overpopulation, and lack of relief measurements. Although drought cannot be reliably predicted, certain precautions can be taken in drought-risk areas.
