Hide Glue
What is Hide Glue?
Hide glue has the best features for piano work, BUT it requires care and practice to use properly. This is difficult business; you really do have to learn to work with it. Proportions of glue and water will vary with the gram strength of the glue. Hide glue sets initially by gelling as it cools. As with virtually all furniture made before white glue was introduced in the 1950s, this chair had been glued originally with hot animal hide glue. Hide glue on the other hand will reglue to old hide glue and form a good strong bond to boot.
Hide glue comes in a solid or pearl form and is mixed weight for weight with water. ie 100grams of powder is mixed with 100grams of water. The glue should match a thick broth when it is ready for use. The adjusting time can be retarded with the addition of a little surplus water or by altering the joint prior to enforcing the glue. Glue is painted on the two right angled faces, the block is placed in position and then slowly but firmly rubbed up and down until the glue starts to grab and the block can no longer be moved freely. These blocks have many applications in restoration work.
