Nanotechnology Initiative

What is nanotechnology initiative?
Nanotechnology is the understanding and control of matter at dimensions between approximately 1 and 100 nanometers, where unique phenomena enable novel applications. The National Nanotechnology Initiative is a United States federal nanoscale science, engineering, and technology research and development program. The NNI is pleased to announce the publication of the report “Nanotechnology-Enabled Sensing” based on a 2009 workshop.

This report describes the state-of-the-art in nanotechnology-enabled sensing and identifies high impact opportunity areas as wide-ranging as medicine, national security, agriculture, energy, and transportation. A nanometer is one-billionth of a meter. A sheet of paper is about 100,000 nanometers thick; a single gold atom is about a third of a nanometer in diameter. Obtain stakeholder input regarding the goals and objectives of an updated NNI Strategic Plan. This is currently under development and scheduled for completion by December 2010.
