What is chronic pancreatitis?
Chronic pancreatitis is a long-standing inflammation of the pancreas that alters its normal structure and functions. Chronic pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas that does not heal or improve, gets worse over time, and leads to permanent damage. The pancreas is a soft, long gland situated at the back of the upper belly behind the stomach. Chronic pancreatitis, demonstrated in the image below, is commonly defined as a continuing, chronic inflammatory process of the pancreas, characterized by irreversible morphological changes.
Chronic pancreatitis is long-term liberal disease of the pancreas that leads to permanent deterioration of the structure and function of the pancreas. The pancreas secretes digestive juices, or enzymes, into the duodenum through a tube called the pancreatic duct. These hormones help the body regulate the glucose it takes from food for energy. Pancreatitis can be acute or chronic. Either form is serious and can lead to complications.
