In Architecture, Megastructure
In Architecture, What is a Megastructure?
Megastructure, a concept which first entered into architectural communication in the late 1950s and 1960s, has a developing definition. The megastructure’s adaptability would change the “hardware” of everyday life, such as utilities, to be run through the megastructure in easily accessible conduits. Today, megastructures follow less utopian ideals, and are built on a “smaller” scale than some of the earlier megastructure proposals. There are no definitive necessities for a structure to be deemed a megastructure; just that it is unique in its size and engineering.
While the human dream is only determined by current engineering and construction technology, fantasy megastructures abound in literature, gaming and film. The Death Star in the Star Wars series is a well known fictional megastructure, and many more are found in games like Halo and science fiction. Many conceptual megastructures such as space elevators and space stations may someday perhaps become reality.
