India has the world’s fourth largest population enduring from AIDS The Delhi High Court on Wednesday has sought a response from the National AIDS Control arrangement NACO for suppressing a World Bank report on faulty HIV kits used in India. The court issued notices after hearing a public interest litigation filed by Dr Kunal Saha, seeking a CBI investigation of the defective HIV kits.
The AIDS prevalence rate in India is relatively lower. In 2007, India’s AIDS prevalence rate stood at approximately 0.30% — the 89th highest in the world. The spread of HIV in India is primarily restricted to the southern and north-eastern regions of the country and India has also been praised for its extensive anti-AIDS campaign. The court issued notice to NACO asking to explain why they have suppressed the findings of the report that poor quality HIV kits were used in India.
