What is Cochlear Implant Work?
Cochlear implants comprise of an external part and an internal part. The external part has a microphone, battery, magnet, communicate radio-frequency antenna and a micro-computer called a sound processor. The processor translates the surrounding sounds into signals that can be sent to the internal part of the device. The internal part is called a receiver/stimulator and involve a micro-computer, radio antenna, and magnet and electrode array. The magnets are of dissimilar mutual opposition and hold the foreign device over the internal device. The radio-frequency antennas allow digital communication between the internal and international parts.
Who is best suited for a cochlear implant?
It is generally agreed that the best adult candidates are those who:
Have intense to significant hearing loss in both ears
Have had limited gain from hearing aids
Have no other medical problems that would make the surgery risky
Have a strong trust to be part of the hearing world and communicate by listening, speak for, and speechreading.
It is generally agreed that the best child candidates are those who:
Have significant hearing loss in both ears
Can receive little or no useful benefit from hearing aids
Have no other medical specify that would make the surgery risky
