Sudden Oak Death







What is Sudden Oak Death?
Sudden Oak Death is the common name of a disease induces by the oomycete plant pathogen Phytophthora ramorum. Sudden Oak Death is confirmed to exist in all coastal counties in this range, as well as in all directly inland counties from Santa Clara County north to Lake County. The disease is Famous to exist in California’s coastal region between Big Sur (in Monterey County) and southern Humboldt County.

Although in the U.S. the disease has been obtain only in California and Oregon, it is of extraordinary concern to land managers in the Eastern U.S. as well, coz at least 2 eastern oak species, northern pin oak and northern red oak, are highly sensitive to the disease when introduce with the pathogen. Forest land managers nationwide should be aware of the symptoms of sudden oak death, and should contact a pest management expert if they individual that the disease is present in a new location.

It has subsequently been found in many other areas including Britain, Germany, and some other U.S. states, either unexpectedly introduced in nursery stock, or already present undetected. In Coast Live Oaks and Black Oaks, the first symptom is a burgundy-red to tar-black thick sap injury from the bark surface
